Halsey Talks the Importance of Creating a 'Safe Space' at Her Concerts

Halsey wants her fans to have fun at her concerts, but there’s something else that is just as important to her.

“[When] I walk into my dressing room, my first thought is: ‘I’m so happy that that show was so amazing and so safe. And that everyone’s gonna go home and go to bed safely and that they had a good time tonight,’” she explained on The Elvis Duran Morning Show on Monday (October 16).

“That’s a win for me, that’s a success, is knowing that I created a safe space for people.”

The 23-year-old singer and songwriter is known for her support of the LGTBQ+ community, even recording a same-sex love song with Lauren Jauregui, so it’s no surprise that a safe space is something she values as an artist.

Halsey is On the Run in 'Bad At Love' Music Video - Watch Now!

Halsey is On the Run in 'Bad At Love' Music Video - Watch Now!

Halsey has dropped her new music video for her song “Bad At Love!”

Picking up where her “Now Or Never” music video left off, it starts with the the singer cruising down the highway on a motorcycle, stopping at a gas station where she embarks on a new adventure.

She also sings about her bad experiences with love while standing in the desert wearing a Hawaiian-print dress.

“Every time I hear the song or play the song, I see Leo [DiCaprio] in his Hawaiian t-shirt riding down the highway jumping around the backseat with his friends,” she told Billboard, explaining that she wanted the song to “sound like Leonardo DiCaprio in a Hawaiian T-shirt in a droptop yellow convertible car, driving down the highway like in Miami Vice with all his friends.”

She also revealed that “Bad At Love” came to be while she was in the middle of coping with a breakup via chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream.

Demi Lovato & Halsey Bury the Hatchet & Pose For a Cute Selfie Together

Demi Lovato & Halsey Bury the Hatchet & Pose For a Cute Selfie Together

Rumors ran rampant late last month that Demi Lovato and Halsey were feuding when fans were pretty sure Demi sub-tweeted the singer.

Halsey hinted in a Paper Magazine interview that songs like “Cool for the Summer” minimized the struggles of bisexuality, and Demi responded with a tweet that fans were sure was directed at the singer.

“You know a song is a hit when people are still talking about the lyrics two years later,” Demi tweeted.

Fortunately, it seems the two talented singers have put their past feuds or alleged feuds behind them. Demi uploaded an Instagram yesterday (July 25) of the two posing together, looking every bit cool with each other — and not just for the summer.

“Ran into this beauty today,” Demi wrote on her caption.

Feud or no feud, we’re so glad these two women are friendly now, because they’re both empowering and influential people who try to use their fame for good.

Ran into this beauty today ????????????

Halsey Explains Why She Chose to Collaborate With Lauren Jauregui Over Katy Perry

Halsey Explains Why She Chose to Collaborate With Lauren Jauregui Over Katy Perry

Everyone who’s anyone knows that Halsey and Lauren Jauregui‘s song “Strangers” is incredible (listen here), not just because it’s a catchy song, but also because it carries a powerful message.

The song is a love song to the LGBTQ community and both Halsey and Lauren are bisexual, so the female pronouns in the song matter.

In a new interview, the 22-year-old “Now or Never” singer talks about how her label actually wanted her to record the duet with Katy Perry instead.

“I was like, I’m not putting an artist on this song unless they’re f*ing gay,” she remembered to Vulture.

While Halsey is of course free to record with whoever she wants to, it isn’t totally fair to judge other peoples’ sexualities, which they are figuring out for themselves. Katy has alluded to struggling with her sexuality growing up in a religious household, and she has every right to label — or not label — herself however she chooses to.

We understand and respect Halsey‘s desire to be as true to the LGBTQ community as possible, but speculating on others’ sexualities is not necessary to do so.

Demi Lovato May Have Just Subtweeted Halsey

Demi Lovato May Have Just Subtweeted Halsey

Fans are convinced Demi Lovato is clapping back at Halsey on social media.

It all started when Halsey brought up bisexual representation in pop music to Paper magazine.

“Oh, yeah. Bisexuality as a taboo,” she said. “‘Don’t tell your mom’ or ‘We shouldn’t do this’ or ‘This feels so wrong but it’s so right’…That narrative is so f-cking damaging to bisexuality and its place in society. That’s something I’ve had to fight my whole life and something I still fight.”

“I still see people on the internet saying, ‘Of course Halsey says she’s bisexual. It’ll help her sell albums,’” she continued. “I never came out as a musician because I was already out when I started making music. I was out in high school!”

“It’s just a shame that it’s so hard for marginalized or minority people to get the same pop music experience as people who are heterosexual or generally part of the majority,” Halsey added.

Two of the lyrics mentioned sound an awful lot like Demi‘s song “Cool for the Summer,” which did not go unnoticed by fans or Demi it seems.

So she took to Twitter to write, “You know a song is a hit when people are still talking about the lyrics two years later. #shhhhdonttellyourmother.”
